Sharon’s crime? “Having a Big Heart”
On March 5, 2015, Sharon was “arrested” by a Valdosta City police officer and escorted from our office to the local Muscular Dystrophy Association Lock-Up Facility. The Muscular Dystrophy Association is the world’s leading nonprofit agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other neuromuscular diseases.
The Lock-Up Event is a leading fundraising program for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Events such as this occur all across the country at various times throughout the year. Business and community leaders agree to be “put behind bars for good,” where they may contact vendors, co-workers, family and friends to get donations that will go toward their “bail.” All funds raised by the MDA Lock-Up Event assist MDA in providing lifesaving research, a nationwide network of medical clinics and accessible summer camp experiences to individuals and families affected by neuromuscular diseases.
By Sharon’s own admission, she feared that she would not be able to rely on “good behavior” to secure her release from jail, so she set out to raise “bail” money. Sharon’s “bail” was set at $1,200.00. She exceeded that goal, and was one of the top 5 fund raisers for this event!
Great work Sharon! Thank you for contributing your time and efforts to our community in such a powerful and meaningful way!
